Get Those Summer Dresses Ready, Girls!
After last week’s polar vortex put most of North America in a deep freeze, summer can’t come soon enough. Musical lineups have started to be released for some of the annual summer festivals, and it looks as though The Airborne Toxic Event will be doing the rounds once again. So far they are confirmed for Atlanta’s Shaky Knees festival in early May, Delaware’s Firefly festival in mid-June and Milwaukee’s Summerfest (late June/early July).
There will no doubt be more to come in the coming weeks. Me, I’ve got my fingers crossed for Pemberton Fest, which returns for the first time since 2008, when TATE blew all their money on a helicopter ride to the venue. Your chopper awaits!
Anna’s Golden Globe Connection
After the Golden Globes aired last Sunday, a reader asked me whether or not “Hell and Back” was eligible for the Best Song award. It was not. Voters were given a list of 75 eligible songs to choose from, and Airborne’s contribution to the Dallas Buyers Club soundtrack was not among them. According to the Golden Globes criteria, songs are only eligible if they were written specifically for a film. I’m not 100% sure, but I haven’t heard Mikel state that “Hell and Back” was written for the movie from the outset. In fact, it was a good month after the song surfaced before we learned that it was going to be on the soundtrack, so I suspect that the song was not earmarked for the soundtrack from the get go, which would explain its exclusion from the voting list.
Likewise, the song was not eligible to receive consideration for the Oscars. In fact, the Academy’s criteria is stricter than the Globes’; not only does a song need to have been written specifically for a movie, it must also appear substantially within the film, or as the first song in the closing credits. “Hell and Back” is not heard anywhere in Dallas Buyers Club, so even if it was written for the film, it still would not meet the Academy’s specifications.
All that being said, there was still an Airborne connection at the Globes. After Alexander Ebert won Best Original Score for his work on All Is Lost, Anna tweeted her congratulations:

As it turns out, her interest in his victory was more than just casual. The following day, she shared this footage from a rehearsal for the first public performance of the score. You may recognize a familiar face on viola.
Behind the Scenes with a Concert Photographer
Just when we thought we’d closed the books on last month’s holiday shows, Rebecca Joelson published a blog post sharing her experiences shooting the 91x Holiday Bonus Show. Rebecca is responsible for the behind-the-scenes photos of Mikel with Fitz and the Tantrums which circulated last month. She also had the privilege of shooting a portrait of each band on the bill, including this fun picture of TATE.
I’ll make up for the brevity of this week’s Toxicity with a longer-than usual video to close things off. “Thursdays in January” gives us a behind the scenes look at Airborne’s legendary Spaceland residency in early 2008.
