The Airborne Toxic Event is well known to be highly engaged with their fans. Virtually every fan has a story about meeting TATE. Whether it’s band members dropping by to greet devoted followers as they patiently wait for hours outside the venue, or an exhausted Mikel Jollett regularly spending upwards of an hour posing for photos and signing autographs after a show, there is very little separation between the band and its fans. The group is quick to point out that they are not rock stars, just people.

So it should be no surprise that the band is equally engaging on social media – this despite the fact that Mikel clearly has a love/hate relationship with Twitter. The Airborne Toxic Event’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts have become increasingly active, and every member of the group save for Noah Harmon has conducted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session – most recently, Anna Bulbrook.

But if you really want to get to know the band members and see their unique personalities shine through, Instagram is the place to go. Amongst a cornucopia of Io the Wonderdog shots from Anna and motorcycle pics from Noah, you’ll get a taste of what makes them tick: at home and on the road; backstage and onstage; the silly and the profound.

Today we give up any pretense of profundity. No song analysis here; no searching for deeper meaning. Just a bit of frivolous photographic fun. Here are This Is Nowhere’s picks for the five greatest TATEstagrams to date.

5. She Still Hasn’t Found What She’s Looking For

As a U2-turned-TATE-devotee, Anna’s Joshua Tree photo from late February combines a whole bunch of my favorite things, and perfectly encapsulates my personal musical journey. There’s just something about that place.

4. Let’s Ride

Noah and Anna both shared the same image illustrating their differences in taste when it comes to rides. One of the coolest things about TATE is the juxtaposition of Anna’s demure, sophisticated style with a bunch of rowdy, inked biker dudes, and it’s on full display here.

3. Road Trip

You’d think after five years of the road Mikel would be sick of traveling, but no. In his downtime last year, he indulged in a pair of major road trips, both of which were extensively chronicled on Instagram. This one, from a solo ride that took him through many states, is notable for its artistry – something not normally associated with selfies. It was on this trip that Mikel penned “Hell and Back” in his head as he rode.

2. Put Your Shirts On!

This one… ummm… I really don’t have anything to say about it, actually. The comments are as amusing as the photo – maybe moreso.

1. Gangsta Anna

The photo that inspired this post, and quite possibly the Best. Photo Ever. If memory serves, Anna was inspired by the revelation that their dressing room had been occupied by a rapper the previous day (I can’t recall which one). Photo credit to Daren Mo-Fo Taylor. Way beyond epic.

The band members have combined for hundreds of Instagrams in the past couple years, meaning that dozens of fun moments had to be left off this list. In fact, just for the hell of it, here are five more that just missed the cut, presented without comment:

Mikel’s Photobomb

Coachella Banditos

Florida Boarders

Chen’s New Wheels

Beach Drummer
