This week’s surprise video release from The Airborne Toxic Event takes us back to “California” – again. Two weeks after the band released the Bombastic video for “California,” they’ve followed it up with the official music video for the second single off Dope Machines. And it just may be their most affecting video to date.
Intermingling gorgeously framed shots of the musicians playing and strolling through various atypical Californian vistas with the real faces of the state’s residents, the video showcases a side of California that is nowhere to be seen in tourist brochures. The result is a number of heart-in-throat moments, from Mexican laborers toiling in vineyards to a recurring storyline that sees one young girl’s dreams of Hollywood stardom ultimately land her in a strip club performing lap dances for skeezy strangers. Not for the faint of heart.
