The Airborne Toxic Auction

Note on International Shipping Charges: eBay seems to be vastly overestimating shipping charges to destinations outside of the USA. If you are purchasing from Canada or Europe, I will revise your invoice to reflect the true shipping charges once the auction closes. Sorry for the confusion!

Over the past three years, This Is Nowhere has grown into an incredible – and incredibly generous – community of fans of The Airborne Toxic Event. Last spring, we saw what could happen when we joined together to make a difference for a great cause. To my surprise and delight, the first ever This Is Nowhere charitable auction raised $1,000 for individuals with Down syndrome. So… we’re back for round two!

If you’re a longtime reader, you probably know that I have an eleven-year-old daughter with Down syndrome. You probably also know that Becca was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014. The past year and a half has been extraordinarily difficult, but she continues to fight with incredible courage. With ten months of treatment still in front of us, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and are once again imagining Becca’s life post-cancer. She is truly an inspiration – and a TATE fan to boot, as you can see from this video from a few years ago.

In early June, my family and I will be participating in Run Up for Down Syndrome on Becca’s behalf. We are raising funds to support the important work of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, which empowers individuals with Down syndrome to reach their full potential through customized educational programs and critical research. After Becca finishes kicking cancer’s ass, she’ll become one of DSRF’s hundreds of students, learning the skills that will be critical for her future independence.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I also happen to work for DSRF. But this is much more than just a job to our family – it is an effective and efficient organization that has a tremendous impact in the lives of many families, and we would be proud to support it even if we weren’t part of it.

So, today I’m asking for your help. If you have a few dollars to spare, we would be very thankful for anything you can do to support our efforts. There are two ways to do so:

1. Make a Donation

All donations are fully tax deductible, both in Canada and the U.S. Click here to donate through our fundraising page.

2. Expand Your Airborne Toxic Event Collection

We have joined with some generous friends and fellow fans of The Airborne Toxic Event to put together a unique auction of TATE items that you won’t find anywhere else. This is a chance for you to add some one-of-a-kind Airborne swag to your personal collection. Every penny raised from the sale of these items (above our costs in procuring the items) will be donated to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation.

All artists involved have donated their time, talents and photographic material free of charge, for which we are so grateful.

Below is a description of each item, grouped according to the artist, along with a link to the eBay auction. All items close at 6:00 am PT, April 12.

Good luck, happy bidding, and thank you for your support!

The Airborne Toxic Event Fan Survey

What’s your favorite song by The Airborne Toxic Event? How do Dope Machines and Songs of God and Whiskey stack up alongside TATE’s classic albums? Which song do you wish they would make a Bombastic video for? It’s time to find out the answers to these and many other burning questions.

Two years ago, we conducted the first ever Airborne Toxic Event Fan Survey, covering everything from favorite songs and albums, to listening habits, concert preferences and much more. Now, with two additional albums having been added to the TATE collection (and enough time having passed since their release to give us all proper perspective on them), we figured it was time for round 2.

We invite fans of The Airborne Toxic Event from all over the world to take part in the 2015 Airborne fan poll and let your voices be heard. Please tell all your TATE friends and encourage them to participate, too.

Before you get started, some things to know:

  • The survey consists of 63 questions, and takes an average of 15 minutes to complete. You cannot save your progress, so don’t start until you know you have time to finish.
  • Please only take the survey once.
  • You do not need to provide your name or email address. It’s completely anonymous.
  • Please forgive the advertising on the survey page; it’s the cost of using a free survey service.

The Airborne Toxic Event Fan Survey will remain open until September 30, with results to follow in mid-October. Thank you for participating!

Note: The survey is now closed. Please come back in mid-October for the results!

The Airborne Toxic Event, Dope Machines

Win me.

UPDATE: This contest is now closed. The winner is: Lori Mislin. Congratulations, Lori!

Everyone likes a win/win/win situation, right?

Over the past few weeks, The Airborne Toxic Event has begun to make an impact in some markets (particularly Philadelphia and Buffalo) with “One Time Thing,” arguably the catchiest song of their career.

You may have noticed the band frequently asking fans to “Shazam” their songs since the release of Dope Machines. Things change quickly in the music industry, and Shazam* has rapidly become arguably the most important factor in the success of an artist. Radio stations and other industry insiders monitor Shazam activity to determine what’s hot and what’s not, and use this information to determine what gets played on the radio and – critically – which bands to bring to town for live shows.

Simply put, if you are clamoring for The Airborne Toxic Event to play your city, the very best thing you can do is to Shazam their music, and encourage others to do the same.

That’s why we are asking TATE fans everywhere to make a concerted effort to Shazam “One Time Thing” frequently over the next month. If you do:

  • It’s a win for the band, who will get a small slice of the recognition and success they so richly deserve;
  • It’s a win for you, because the more TATE gets on the Shazam map in your region, the better the odds that you’ll get to see them in person; and
  • It could be a double-win for you, because we’ve got a vinyl copy of Dope Machines to give away to one lucky Shazammer!

Here’s how this will work. From now through Sept. 15, every time you Shazam “One Time Thing” and fire us a screen capture, you will receive one free entry into the draw for the Dope Machines vinyl. You can enter up to once a day, and we encourage you to do it daily. You can send us your screen capture by tagging us on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.

On Sept. 16, we will compile what we hope will be thousands of entries and randomly select a winner. Happy Shazamming!

*If you’re not familiar with Shazam, it’s a mobile app that recognizes the music around you. When you hear a song playing, whether it’s on your device, computer, TV, CD player or radio, you can hit the Shazam button to instantly identify the artist and song. So, just cue up “One Time Thing” and Shazam it!

Please note that to use the Shazam app, you need an iPhone, iPad, Android device or Windows phone. It is also possible to emulate an Android device on your PC, if you do not have a smartphone. Click here for more info.

By Glen

Over the past two years, we’ve been fortunate to build a faithful following here at This Is Nowhere, and to watch an incredible little community grow out of our shared love of The Airborne Toxic Event. It’s been a privilege to get to know so many of you – whether in person at shows, or just virtually as we enjoy the band together online.

From time to time, readers ask us what they can do to support the website. Though we very much appreciate the generous sentiment, I’ve always been content to run the website out of my own pocket. We’re happy to provide all our content and giveaways free of charge, and have no intention of changing that.

However, we got to thinking… perhaps we could put this community to good use and join together to make a difference for a cause that is near and dear to our hearts.

If you’re a longtime reader, you probably know that I have a ten-year-old daughter with Down syndrome. You probably also know that this has been an extraordinarily difficult year for us, as Becca was diagnosed with leukemia last October. In the sixth months since then, we have spent over 80 nights in hospital as she fights this cursed disease with a courage that surpasses anything I have ever imagined possible. She is truly an inspiration – and a TATE fan to boot!

Next month, my family and I will be participating in Run Up for Down Syndrome on Becca’s behalf. We are raising funds to support the important work of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, which empowers individuals with Down syndrome to reach their full potential through customized educational programs and critical research. DSRF has been instrumental in Becca learning to read, and we look forward to continuing that work after she’s done beating cancer.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I also happen to work for DSRF. But this is much more than just a job to us – it is an effective and efficient organization that has a tremendous impact in the lives of many families, and we would be proud to support it even if we weren’t part of it.

2. Add to Your Airborne Toxic Event Collection

We have joined with some generous friends and fellow fans of The Airborne Toxic Event to put together a unique auction of TATE items that you won’t find anywhere else. This is a chance for you to add some one-of-a-kind (or in some cases, two-of-a-kind) Airborne swag to your personal collection. Most of the items have been signed by the band, for which we are extremely grateful. Every penny raised from the sale of these items will be donated to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation – all artists involved have donated their time and talents free of charge.

Below is a description of each item, along with a link to the eBay auction.

Glen, Fan of The Airborne Toxic EventGlen is the founder and editor of This Is Nowhere. He’s grateful for an understanding wife and kids who indulge his silly compulsion to chase a band all over the Pacific Northwest (and occasionally beyond) every time the opportunity arises.

The Airborne Toxic Event, Songs of God and WhiskeyLast month, The Airborne Toxic Event treated fans to a delightful surprise in the form of Songs of God and Whiskey: an unannounced acoustic rock album that was hastily recorded over three weeks and released solely in digital format through the band’s website.

The only thing that was missing was a lyrics booklet… until now.

Conceived by TATE fan Elva and designed by This Is Nowhere, the booklet includes unofficial lyrics for each song. We’re making it available free of charge in two formats: digital PDF (for on-screen viewing), and print-ready PDF so you can make your own CD. Download the version of your choice from the links below.

The Airborne Toxic Event Lyrics CollectionWe’re very excited today to officially launch a brand new feature here at This Is Nowhere: the complete Airborne Toxic Event lyrics collection.

For the first time, lyrics to all Airborne songs – official releases, b-sides, singles, covers and unreleased – have been gathered together in one place for easy reference. Whenever possible (ie. for all the studio albums other than Songs of God and Whiskey), the official lyrics have been used; for Songs of God and Whiskey and other tracks for which official lyrics have never been published, the songs have been very carefully transcribed by fans of The Airborne Toxic Event (thank you to Julie, Adinda, Stephanie and Jennifer for your invaluable assistance with this).

We believe we now have the most accurate TATE lyrics collection available anywhere. A few uncertainties remain on some of the transcribed songs, and we welcome you to leave suggested corrections in the comments on each song page.

Enjoy exploring the most profound lyrical compositions in music today!

The Airborne Toxic Event Dope Machines cookiesIn the 48 hours following the release of The Airborne Toxic Event’s new album Dope Machines, we invited fans to tweet the name of their favorite song from the record, along with the hashtag #toxictreats.

As an added enticement, everyone who participated was entered into a draw for a dozen Dope cookies celebrating the release, courtesy of our friend Susan, The Airborne Toxic Baker.

And the winner is…

Lara Zakov!

Congratulations Lara! Please send your mailing address to us at crowdsourcing@thisisnowhere.com, and we’ll get your cookies shipped out to you.

Thank you to all who participated. Enjoy Dope Machines!
